Designed to compensate for the vertical movement of offshore drilling rigs, motion compensation (MoCom) systems work to isolate the heaving motion of the vessel from the drill string, to apply a constant tension to prevent riser buckling, and to tension guidelines and pod lines.
While this application is still highly committed to air as the principal gaseous media, the industry is looking more intently at nitrogen. This is primarily driven by a need for increased corrosion resistance.
